"the man from Creignish Mountain"
Yesterday we spoke of the winter he had and the cougar he saw during the cold months. He was driven off the mountain by bad weather five days ago and now he was returning. He had been walking for four hours when i picked him up. i have never know this man's name but he has sat in my truck many times over the years. Originally from Newfoundland he came here back in the eighties as part of a crew hauling softwood off the mountain. The crew he worked for pulled out and he has been living up there ever since. He walks. He walks everywhere, slumped and slow from years of labour.
Today he was noticeably cold. i stopped and bought coffee. That seemed to make him happy. i offered him a cigarette. He smoked and drank the coffee and spoke of the farmland we drove through. He put the cigarette butt in his pocket for later. We drove up to Port Hood where i dropped him off giving him a few more smokes. He smiled then, didn't say goodbye, never says goodbye, just nodded his head as he got out.
